In Chicago, we have a long history of loving Halloween. One of our previous mayors instituted many events surrounding the holiday because he enjoyed it so much, and the city has kept up the tradition each year with bigger and better celebrations.
Need a costume for going out and about this October 31? Fantasy Costumes, on Milwaukee Ave., is the place to go to whether you’re attending a holiday party or trick-or-treating in your neighborhood. The store takes up a full city block, and has separate rooms for wigs, adult “sexy” customes, and kids’ costumes. You can find decor, makeup, and accessories of all kinds. There are a million items on site, and you can buy, rent, or just get inspired by all the cool things in the store, from scary masks perfect for aspiring zombies to group Minions outfits and dog costumes.
From today (10/22) through 10/31, Fantasy Costumes will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so you pretty much have no excuse for not having a costume this year. This is a no-frills kind of store, and it’s really packed full of the stuff you need to dress up as almost anything. My 10-year-old son got lost in the fake weapons section, finally emerging with a lightsaber for his “Star Wars” Kylo Ren costume (he hasn’t stopped playing with the thing since we got it).
Want a celebrity testimonial? Well, the owner tells us that Taylor Swift made a stop there to buy a bunch of items not too long ago. But we don’t need celebrities to tell us that Fantasy Costumes is something special. Traditional, big-chain Halloween pop-ups that you can find all over the suburbs this time of year don’t offer the depth of selection and service that you can find here at Fantasy Costumes – you can even special-order plus sizes. I’m a little bummed they didn’t carry any Tron costumes, but Black Widow from the Avengers or Princess Leia will do just fine.
